FCCJ COMMITTEES AND CHAIRS 2013-1014
Associate Member Liaison
Chair: Kurt Sieber
The Associate Members Liaison Committee promotes the social club life of the
1,600 Associate Members and Professional Associates to blend in with the main
journalistic and professional activities. The forthcoming transition to a Public
Interest Association will include the election in 2014 of three Associates to the
Board of Directors to also widen the overall management expertise at the FCCJ.
Shadan Hojin Panel
Chairs: Kazuo Abiko and Yoshisuke Iinuma
The Shadan Hojin Panel oversees the transition of the FCCJ's legal status as
required by law, and advises the Board of Directors to make sure that the Club's
governance and conduct of business are in accordance with the law.
Chair: Yoshio Murakami
The Koeki Committee formulates, organizes, and coordinates various necessary
works and documentations in order for the FCCJ to attain the public interest
status under Japan’s new public incorporated association law.
Chair: Sandra Mori
The Entertainment Committee provides eclectic programs including cultural,
musical, educational, gourmet nights of international cuisine and sake tasting
events to bring together and satisfy the divergent FCCJ membership. We
celebrate our anniversary each year to remind us of our beginnings and to raise
money for the DeRoy Scholarship Fund which provides support for young

The Exhibition Committee arranges a regular schedule of exhibitions for display
in various areas of the Club.

Food & Beverage
Chair: Rike Wootten
The Food and Beverage Committee is dedicated to bringing the best in food and
beverages to the Club, with the Main Bar, the Pen and Quill, and the Masukomi
Sushi Bar. We work closely with International Restaurant Service Co./Tokyu Hotels,
and Ito-ya to provide the best for our members.
Freedom of Press
Chair: Michael Penn
The Freedom of Press Committee’s task is defined by Article 3 of the Articles
of Association, which declares the FCCJ was established “to defend the
freedom of the press and free exchange of information and, in so doing, to
maintain and increase friendly relations and sympathetic understanding between
Japan and other countries.”
House & Property
Chairs: Martin Koelling and Paul Boylan
The House & Property Committee is one of the standing committees of the FCCJ,
chaired by the first vice-president of the club. It deals with most aspects of our
facility management, except for the IT equipment.
Chair: Masaaki Fukunaga
The Human Resources Committee assists the Board and General Manager
regarding personnel and related matters, with the Second Vice President as chair,
understanding that all staff report to the General Manager who implements all
personnel policies and who reports to the Board. The committee also acts as
a grievance panel in staff disputes.
Information, Technology Policy (ITPC)
Chairs: John Boyd and Erol Emed
The ITPC oversees the non-Web related tech, including POS/Accounting/Membership
Database, PCs, servers and networks.
Chair: Teddy Jimbo
The Web Content Committee is responsible for the development and upkeep
of the Club’s website and its social network functions.
Chair: John Harris
The Publications Committee oversees the publishing of the Number 1 Shimbun,
the FCCJ’s monthly magazine – available in print and online – showcasing
articles by members of the Club on everything from global politics to Club
news and activities.
Young Member Activities
Chair: Albert Siegel
The Young Members Activities Committee consists mainly of young members
of the FCCJ with the goal of providing activities and services that are of use to
young professionals in their careers.
Chair: Yoshio Murakami
The Banquets/Events Marketing Committee develops new events and programs
to bring in revenue, expand the Club's public presence and services, and
attract new members. Collaborates with our F&B outsourcing partner,
International Restaurant Service Co./Tokyu Hotels on new initiatives.
Chairs: Monzurul Huq, Peter O’Connor, Kent Dahl
The Membership Committee considers all applications for all categories of
Membership of the Club. Conducts regular reviews of all memberships to ensure
their qualifications are consistent with their status. Actively concerned in
maintaining and increasing membership and liaises closely with the Membership

The Improvement Committee looks at different parts of the Club's activities,
zeros in on specific situations and makes suggestions to the appropriate committee,
if there is one, the President, and General Manager. The Committee makes
constructive long-term recommendations and also offers guidance on implementation.
Library, Archives & Workroom
Chairs: Suvendrini Kakuchi and Koichi Ishiyama
The Library Committee provides one of the most important services of the
FCCJ-- organizing Book Break events on a monthly basis, inviting distinguished
authors writing in English, and compiling news resources and research.
Chairs: Karen Severns
The Movie Committee screens the only ongoing series of English/Japanese-
subtitled sneak previews in Japan, a carefully curated lineup of award-winning films
featuring hard-hitting social documentaries, hardcore indie releases and crowd-pleasing
commercial titles, with a range of high-profile guests and invaluable filmmaker Q&A sessions.
Professional Activities (PAC)
Chairs: David McNeill and Abi Sekimitsu
The PAC Committee organizes press conferences and other events at the Club.
Future events are decided by a group of working journalists that rotates every year.
Chair: Haruko Watanabe
The Special Projects Committee organizes press/study tours, theater and museum
visits, the Saturday Lunch with Shakespeare series and other events and activities
not organized by other committees.
DeRoy Memorial Scholarship + Professional Development
Chair: Masaaki Fukunaga
The DeRoy Memborial Scholarship & Professional Development Committee advises
the Board on disposition of the Club's scholarship fund, and organizes workshops
for students with an interest in journalism, meets with students members of the FCCJ,
holds a fundraising party and the DeRoy Memorial Scholarship Contest.
The Membership Marketing Committee undertakes a broad range of activities
to attract new members.
