Saturday Lunch with Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet
October 24, 2020

Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's most popular tragic love stories. Written early in his career it is about two young people whose tragic deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. Along with Hamlet it is one of his most frequently performed works.

Set in Verona, the play is based on the legendary feud between two families, the Montagues and the Capulets. The feud ends with the deaths of the two lovers.

Shakespeare scholar Paul Snowden, professor emeritus of Waseda University will make an introduction.

The BBC version was directed by Alvin Rakoff and first broadcast in December 1978.
It stars Patrick Rycart as Romeo and then 14-year-old Rebecca Saire as Juliet. Michael Hordern is Capulet and Chorus is played by the legendary John Gielgud. Another Shakespearean master actor, Esmond Knight, appears as Old Capulet. John Paul plays Montague.

Tickets for members including lunch are 3,500 yen per person. Guests and non-members' tickets are 4,000 yen. Drink tickets for non-members are available at the front desk. Cancellations after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, will be charged in full. Please make reservations through the Front Desk (03-3211 -3161).
