Four hundred years ago the first recorded English roast beef dinner served in Japan was prepared for Matsura Hoin, the 26th daimyo of Hirado, in Nagasaki prefecture, by the kitchen of the English traders of the East India Company.

This important culinary milestone will be commemorated at the FCCJ on November 5, when a roast beef dinner will be served. The present direct descendant of the Hirado Matsura daimyo family, Mr. Akira Matsura, who would be the 41st daimyo, will attend.

The original meal was made possible by the arrival in Hirado in June 1613 of the East India Company's first ship to Japan, the 'Clove'. The ship and its crew had stayed in Hirado for some months to set up a trading post and to cultivate local contacts, while their mission chief visited Edo and the Tokugawa shogun.

Historical highlights of this first English trading voyage to Japan will be provided in a lecture by Professor Timon Screech, Head of the School of Arts at the School of Oriental and African Studies of London University and author of many books on Japanese art and culture including The Shogun's Painted Culture: Fear and Creativity in the Japanese States, 1760-1829 and Sex and the Floating World: Erotic Imagery in Japan, 1720-1810.

This year, 2013, is the 400th anniversary of ties between Japan and Britain, initiated by the arrival of  the 'Clove' and various events have been held in both countries to mark the occasion. Professor Screech is co-chairman of the steering committee of the Japan400 organization, established to arrange commemorative events in both Japan and the UK.

Tickets for the 3-course dinner are 4,200 yen (including tax) per person
