Japan’s cinematic crusader for truth and transparency, Gen Takahashi, returns to FCCJ with another bold exposé, this time revealing the pervasive corruption in Japan’s legal system. Not quite as intense as his acclaimed “Confessions of a Dog” (2006), which depicted shockingly illicit activities by the police (“the largest organized crime ring in Japan,” according to the director), this new film wraps its condemnations around a love story between an overworked young judge and his fiancée (Kojima), who suddenly finds herself on the wrong side of the law… and in her lover’s courtroom, where he presides like the mighty Zeus.

Takahashi’s truth-based film focuses on Judge Kano, a rising star of the judiciary who must meet a quota of judgments every single day if he wants to get a promotion. To save time, he and his colleagues find defendants guilty by default. After all, if these people were innocent, why were they arrested in the first place? When a dramatic chain of events brings his fiancée to his dock and jeopardizes his career, Kano must make the hardest judgment of his life.

“Court of Zeus” is punctuated with oddly comic moments, but the tension doesn’t let up until its final scene, when its lengthy running time is amply rewarded. Succeeding without seeming polemical, Takahashi’s expose is his most commercial film yet - but its subversive message still has the power to shock Western viewers.

Please join us for this sneak preview before the film’s theatrical release in Japan in February 2014.

Since his 1991 debut “Heartless,” writer-director Gen Takahashi has become a pivotal figure on the independent film scene, living between Hong Kong and Tokyo, creating films with a social conscience. His second film, “Young Blood Typhoon” (1995), won the Audience Award at the Yubari International Film Festival. In Hong Kong, he has produced the Japanese TV series “See you in Kowloon,” Hong Kong-Japan coproductions, commercials and videos. In 2004, Takahashi began working on coproductions between Shanghai, Hong Kong and Japan, resulting in his 2004 film “Charon.” His 2005 masterwork “Confessions of a Dog” was hailed internationally, and “Goth” (2009) was distributed overseas as well. Takahashi’s New York-set documentary “An Ordinary Opinion” will hit theaters next year. He is now working on his first Hollywood feature in the US.

Toshiro Senba is known as the “Japanese Serpico.” A former police officer for the Ehime Prefectural Police, while active, he exposed the corruption from within and became the first active police officer to formally file charges against a police department. Upon retiring, he was elected as vice-mayor of Akune, Kagoshima Prefecture. His autobiography, "Incumbent Cop: Slush Fund Whistleblower"(2009), detailed his experiences on the force and the corruption he saw from the inside. His appearance in “The Court of Zeus” marks his debut as an actor.
