Marking a groundbreaking collaboration between Japan and Indonesia, the highly anticipated “Killers” arrives at FCCJ fresh from its world premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The pan-Asian thriller was coproduced by Nikkatsu Corp. (as part of its 100th anniversary celebration) and Indonesian production house Guerilla Merah Films. Shot in Tokyo and Jakarta, the film’s creative team boasts some of the hottest names in the business: The producer is Yoshinori Chiba (“Cold Fish”) and the executive producer is Gareth Evans (“The Raid: Redemption”). The directors are the acclaimed Mo Brothers (Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel), who made a name for themselves with “Macabre” (aka “Rumah Darah”). And the action scenes have been choreographed by the amazing action team from “The Raid,” which memorably introduced the Indonesian martial art pencak silat to the world.

Codeveloped by Timo Tjahjanto and Takuji Ushiyama from an original story by Ushiyama (producer of “Nightmare Detective”), “Killers” is a character-driven psychological thriller that delves with dark intensity into the minds of two men with seemingly nothing in common: Nomura (Kitamura), a self-obsessed serial killer residing in Tokyo, and Bayu (Antara), a failing journalist and a struggling father in Jakarta. Connected online, the men become rivals, and inexplicably start to feed off each other. As their lives grow more uncontrollable, they each begin a journey into a maze of violent self-discovery.

Join us for this sneak preview before the film’s theatrical release on February 1. Following the opening in Japan, “Killers” is scheduled for release around the globe.

Jakarta-based directing duo the Mo Brothers (Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel) met in Sydney, Australia. After garnering attention for their horror short “Dara” (2007), they won global acclaim for their debut feature “Macabre” (2009), a love letter to Tobe Hooper’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” They continue to work both together and independently. Timo Tjahjanto graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Sydney in 2002 and New York Film Academy in 2004. In 2012, he contributed to the anthology horror-comedy “The ABCs of Death” (2012) and teamed up with “The Raid” director Gareth Evans for the “Safe Haven” segment of “V/H/S 2” (2013), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Timo is currently working on his solo feature debut, writing and directing “The Night Comes for Us,” a hard-boiled action-thriller.

Kazuki Kitamura burst on the scene in 1999, winning the Breakout Actor Award from Kinema Junpo for his performances in “Minazuki” (Rokuro Mochizuki) and “Ley Lines” (Takashi Miike). He has since appeared in Takeshi Kitano’s “Blood and Bones,” Hong Kong director Jingle Ma’s “Speed Angels” (2012) and is starring in the upcoming “The Raid 2.” He has also appeared in “Azumi” (2003), “Godzilla” (2004), “Trick: The Last Stage” and “Thermae Romae” (2012), as well as many TV shows. He will soon be seen in  “The Man from Reno” and  “Thermae Romae II.”

Rin Takanashi began her career with Gen Takahashi’s “Goth” (2008) and starred in the action TV series “Samurai Sentai Shinkenger,” among other appearances on TV. She first received international attention with her compelling performance in Abbas Kiarostami’s “Like Someone in Love” (2012), selected for competition in the Cannes Film Festival. She has also appeared in “Isn’t Anyone Alive?” (2012), “Love for Beginners” (2012), and will soon be seen in “It All Began When I Met You.” “Killers” marks her second role in an international production.

The lobby bar will be serving a range of drinks before the screening, from 6:00 - 6:30 pm, available to both members and guests.
