"FCCJ Tokyo gubernatorial candidate series"
Tokyo Gubernatorial Candidate
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation
Kenji Utsunomiya travelled an unusual road to his candidacy for Governor of Tokyo. He was born and raised in a farming family in remote Ehime Prefecture and later Oita Prefecture. His family survived and prospered only through enormously hard work, and through perseverance the young Utsunomiya entered the super-elite Tokyo University Law School in 1968.
His long career has been marked by a deep concern for social justice and defending the downtrodden. From 2010 to 2012 he was the head of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, at the pinnacle of his legal profession.
In December 2012, Utsunomiya made his first run at the office of Tokyo Governor with the backing of several liberal-left political parties. He emerged as runner-up to Naoki Inose, but the margin was a very wide one.
With Inose's rapid and unexpected fall from grace, Kenji Utsunomiya was the first to throw his hat in the ring. Come and hear from a man who calls with a powerful and credible voice for the interests of the weak and needy to be protected.
