"Why Tokyo's Olympic Stadium Should be Scrapped"

Fumihiko Maki,
Language: The Speech and Q&A will be in English

Tokyo's ambitious and expensive plans for the 2020 Olympics have raised eyebrows. The city has promised to build 22 of its 37 Olympic venues from scratch, and spend $1bn refurbishing the national Olympic Stadium, the centerpiece of Japan's 1964 Olympic Games. At nearly 290,000 square meters, the main stadium, designed by Zaha Hadid, will be the biggest main stadium in the history of the games.

The total estimated price tag for the world's most expensive sporting extravaganza is Y409 billion.

Fumihiko Maki is one of a growing number of people, including several candidates for the Tokyo gubernatorial election, who believe those plans are over the top. Maki is leading a group of top architects who say the design for the stadium is too big, probably unsafe and would overwhelm the local area. As a Pritzker laureate - probably the world's top architecture prize - his is a hard voice to ignore. But his protest puts him in conflict with, among others, architectural icon Tadao Ando, who helped select the Hadid design.

Maki was born in Tokyo in 1928 and educated at the University of Tokyo and Harvard University Graduate School of Design. While living in the United States, he taught architecture and urban design at Harvard and Washington University. After returning to Japan, he became a professor at Tokyo University, where he taught architecture until 1987.Maki has lectured extensively in Japan, the United States and Europe. His collective writings were published in the volume Nurturing Dreams, by MIT Press, in 2008.
