"TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA"
(Doors open 11:45)
Guest lecturer, Chris Parham
The Two Gentlemen of Verona is considered by some to be Shakespeare's first play, and is often seen as showing his first tentative steps in laying out some of the themes which he would later deal in more detail; for example, it is the first of his plays in which a heroine dresses as a boy. The play deals with the themes of friendship and infidelity, the conflict between friendship and love, and the foolish behavior of people in love. Two Gentlemen has the smallest cast of any of Shakespeare's plays.
Chris Parham studied at the Central School of Speech & Drama, London. He is one of the co-founders and associate directors of Black Stripe Theatre, Tokyo, a group whose main goal is to introduce modern and contemporary theatre in English here. He has appeared in many plays in London and Tokyo, as well as on NHK television, and has also directed a number of challenging plays by, among others, Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter, David Mamet and Bertolt Brecht. Among the plays he has appeared in here in Tokyo is Anjin, English Samurai, a joint production by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Hori Pro, Tokyo.
The play was adapted for the BBC Television Shakespeare series in 1983. Directed by Don Taylor, it starred Tyler Butterworth as Proteus, John Hudson as Valentine, Tessa Peake-Jones as Julia and Joanne Pearce as Silvia.
