The first Muslim wrestler from the Middle East/Africa region to be promoted to the elite makuuchi division.

* Initial reservations are limited to two tickets and may be subject to further change.

Osunaarashi Kintaro
Sumo Wrestler
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English

Sumo, Japan's traditional wrestling, is often a source of bewilderment and fascination for foreigners. It is also one of Japan's most diverse professional sports. There are many foreigners among the top ranks of this ancient discipline, with Mongolians dominating; Eastern Europeans, however, including a Bulgarian and a Czech, are also prominent. (A few decades ago, Americans from Hawaii led the way in breaking into the previously all-Japanese sumo world.)

Osunaarashi may start a new trend, however, as he's the first Muslim wrestler from the Middle East/Africa region to be promoted to the elite makuuchi division. He now has fought two makuuchi tournaments and has a record of 16 wins, and 14 losses. And he's done this while observing the fasting period of Ramadan.

Osunaarashi was born in Cairo, Egypt as Abdelrahman Alaa Eldin Mohamed Ahmed Shalan. When he was a 14-year-old bodybuilder weighing 120kg, he lost a sumo match to a slim, opponent weighing only 65kg -- and the young "Budi" learned that sumo was not about weight or force, but about technique. Come and listen in person to this fascinating story from one of the most exciting young talents in sumo.

Osunaarashi will be accompanied by his stable master, Otake Oyakata. Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). The charge for members/members’ guest is 1,700/2,600 yen; non-members including guest-members eligible to attend may pay in cash. (Menu: tomato and cheese hamburger steakwith demi-glace sauce) Reservations canceled less than one hour in advance for working press members, and 24 hours for all others, will be charged in full.
