Former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia & Leader of Opposition Coalition
Language: The speech and Q& A will be in English
Anwar Ibrahim is a renowned intellectual and reform politician, and leader of Malaysia’s Opposition Coalition.
Anwar said he arrived at Narita International Airport on a personal visit on January 19th and was told by immigration authorities he was barred due to his 1999 conviction for sodomy and corruption. However, Anwar had already been allowed entry into Tokyo on three previous occasions after his conviction -- in 2006, 2009, and 2012. Anwar, as a once "rising political star out of Malaysia's longtime ruling party" said he is puzzled and shocked by stance of the Japanese authorities.
He is now back in Tokyo (apparently his conviction isn't so prohibitive of entry to Japan after all) and coming to the FCCJ tomorrow (February 28) at 12:00pm to 13:30pm. This time he has been invited to Japan by Jiro Hanyu, chairman of the Sasagawa Peace Foundation to discuss a joint initiative to promote Muslim democrats and issues of mutual interests in promoting Japan-Asia relations.
Anwar Ibrahim was Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister from 1993, Minister of Finance from 1990-1998, and also a onetime Chairman of the Development Committee of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. As a student leader, Anwar was the founder of Malaysia's Muslim Youth Movement and has extensive experience working with international Muslim organizations.
