Yoichi Masuzoe, Governor of Tokyo
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English
Yoichi Masuzoe is fresh off the greatest electoral victory of his political career, handily disposing of three major challengers for the post of Governor of Tokyo, including a former prime minister whose would-be comeback he managed to stop hard and cold in the unaccustomed snows of the capital city streets.
Shintaro Ishihara was the governor who launched the 2020 Summer Olympics bid. Naoki Inose was the one who secured those Olympics from the international committee. Now the lot has fallen to Yoichi Masuzoe to lay the foundations for the success of that massive undertaking and, if he is skillful and lucky, to preside over it during his quite-conceivable second term.
Yoichi Masuzoe has already had a dramatic political career: A former Minister of Health and Welfare; he has often led polls as the public's choice to one day become the nation's Prime Minister. But in the lead-up to his impressive success in the Tokyo gubernatorial race, he had also spent several years as head of a tiny political party that never gained momentum or influence.
Now Masuzoe is back, and based on the highly engaging press conference he gave at the Club as a candidate, his first appearance as Governor of Tokyo is an event not to be missed.
