East Asia Strategic Review 2014

Broadcast/Internet: 17:00 JST, April 4, News papers: Morning edition, April 5

Eiichi Katahara
Professor & Director, Regional Studies Department
The National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS)
Language:The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation

Tension over the Senkaku Islands remains high after China announced the creation of an air defense identification zone (ADIZ). The unpredictability of North Korean behavior has increased after the execution of Jang Sung Taek who was said to have a close relationship with China. Moreover the Abe administration's aim to change its policy on collective self-defense is rattling surrounding countries.

All of these factors make this an excellent occasion to have a briefing on the East Asia Strategic Review 2014 by Dr. Eiichi Katahara, Professor and Director of the Regional Studies Department at The National Institute for Defense Studies of the Japanese Ministry of Defense. Katahara will brief journalists on the highlights of the EASR 2014, including the more contested, strained situation in East Asia, US-China relations as a defining factor for the regional security order, and the advances in multilateral security dialogue and cooperation in the Asia Pacific.

EASR is an annual report since 1996 on the security situation of East Asia. The Japanese edition of the EASR 2014 is to be made public by the end of March 2014, and the English edition is forthcoming in May 2014.

Prior to joining NIDS, Katahara was Professor of International Relations at Kobe Gakuin University; a visiting fellow at Stanford University's Asia-Pacific Research Center; a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California's Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC); lecturer in the Department of Political Science and research fellow at the Australia-Japan Research Center, both at the Australian National University.
