Why PM Abe's plans on "Exercising the Right to Collective Defense" are right

Takeshi Iwaya
Chairman of Security Research Council of LDP,
Member of the House of Representatives
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Cabinet has overturned a decades-old ban on exporting weapons, which is part of Abe’s bid to rework national security policy. With this out of the way, he is expected to proceed soon to his next step: reinterpreting the Constitution to allow for the right of collective self-defense.

If the prime minister had his way, he would by all indications have preferred to change the Constitution to achieve his goal. The next best thing is to reinterpret the Constitution to allow for collective self-defense and Abe has indicated that he believes he and his Cabinet have the authority to revise the interpretation of the Constitution at will.

You have heard four two opposition MPs - Mizuho Fukushima (SDP) and Taro Yamamoto (Independent) - say why Abe's thinking on the Constitution and collective self-defense is wrong and misguided.

Come hear the other side as Takeshi Iwaya, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) security research council, gives his take on the issue. Elected six times as a member of the House of Representatives, Iwaya has spent most of his political life in defense and foreign portfolios, putting him in good stead to also offer a perspective that takes into account the regional implications of Abe’s push for a new security policy.
