The turbulent Arab world: An insider's view
Kamal Gaballa
Managing Director of Al Ahram
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English

Kamal Gaballa joined the staff of Al Ahram on graduation from Cairo University's Faculty of Mass Communications.During his long career with the leading Arabic language daily, he served in various capacities and covered many events that contributed to the shaping of a post-Cold War world order.

During the First Gulf War, Gaballa gained first-hand experience of covering a war from the field. Later he was posted to Kuwait as Al Ahram's correspondent in the Gulf region. He was assigned to Tokyo in 2001 as bureau chief of his newspaper and served here until Al-Ahram closed the bureau in 2006. On his return to Cairo, he headed various news desks, and was appointed Managing Editor in 2009, a post he still holds.

During his long journalistic career, Kamal has covered almost all key issues related to the Middle-East and Arab world. He has travelled extensively on assignments and interviewed leading figures from places as far apart as Morocco in the west and Japan in the east.

With the Middle East and the Arab world undergoing turbulence and experiencing changes with far reaching consequences, Gaballa will focus on those issues from the perspective of a journalist. He will speak about the future of the Arab Spring, turbulence in Libya, the failure of Muslim Brotherhood and the possibility of a backlash in his own country, the human tragedy in Gaza, and of course, the emergence of a more radicalized fundamental force with vicious objectives.
