The state of UK-Japan cooperation in civil nuclear & health effects of radiation in Fukushima
Robin Grimes
Chief Scientific Officer, The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Gerry Thomas
Chair in Molecular Pathology, Imperial College London
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English

Robin Grimes, Chief Scientific Officer of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, will describe  the state of UK-Japan cooperation in civilian nuclear energy and how the British government uses scientific information when forming policy.

Our second speaker, Gerry Thomas, a molecular pathologist at Imperial College London, will tackle the thorny question of the human health effects of the radiological contamination released during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster, particularly the growing number of reported cases of thyroid cancer among children. Researchers at Fukushima Medical University recently announced that screening of 296,000 children living in the prefecture turned up 57 diagnosed cases of thyroid cancer. Is this a normal rate of occurrence or the product of exposure to radiation?

As the FCO's Chief Scientific Advisor, Robin Grimes provides advice to the Foreign Secretary, Ministers and officials on science, technology and innovation. He is also Professor of Materials Physics at Imperial College and a principal investigator of the Research Council’s UK Nuclear Fission consortium project. He was a member of the UK's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies that studied the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

Gerry Thomas is Chair in Molecular Pathology at Imperial College London and Coordinator for the Chernobyl Tissue Bank. A specialist in the molecular pathology of thyroid and breast cancer, she has been involved in studying the radiation health effects of the Fukushima disaster since September 2011. She recently participated in a local symposium with doctors and parents in Fukushima to discuss the thyroid cancer tests that are now being carried out on children in the prefecture.
