Special Lecturer: Stuart Varnam-Atkin, writer and narrator

Our next performance in the popular Saturday Lunch with Shakespeare series is "All's Well That Ends Well." Set in France and Italy, this is a story of one-sided romance, based on a tale from Boccaccio's The Decameron.

Helen, orphaned daughter of a renowned doctor, is under the protection of the widowed Countess of Rossillion. In love with Bertram, the countess' son, Helen follows him to the French court, where, using her father's skills, she cures the king of a near fatal illness.
The grateful monarch rewards Helen by offering her the husband of her choice. She names Bertram; he resists. The play reveals how she eventually wins her husband's respect.
Stuart Varnam-Atkin is once again our guest lecturer. Oxford-educated, Stuart is a prolific writer of books on Japanese culture, including "The Best of Japanese Culture: A Photographic Overview" published in July (IBC). He has produced prose versions of several Shakespeare plays to help Japanese students of English, and his latest book on Shakespeare dialogues will be published soon by The Japan Times. The narrator on NHK World TV's "Tomorrow" and "Begin Japanology" programmes, he's also a TV presenter on the Open University of Japan.

Tickets for a sumptuous lunch are 2,000 yen per person and a cash bar is available for your choice of drinks. Cancellations after 6 p.m. Monday, October 6, will be charged in full. Please make reservations through the Front Desk: 3211-3161
