Tokyo Olympic Stadium Monumental Mistake or City Enhancement
Arata Isozaki
Architect
Satoshi Ohashi
senior associate at Zaha Hadid Arhitects
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation

The design for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Stadium has proven to be controversial from the start. Some argued that the city should update the original facility built for the 1964 Olympics, while others were in favour of a new stadium. Once the design for the new stadium was decided, it generated even more controversy.

The stadium's design has been scaled down after an uproar over its huge scale and complaints about the cost, but the facility is still proving controversial. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, the stadium has drawn both praise and withering criticism.

Arata Isozaki, one of Japan's most prominent architects, said it was more like "a turtle waiting for Japan to sink so that it can swim away."

Born in 1931, Isozaki founded his own practice in 1963 and his works include the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Sant-Jordi Sports Palace in Barcelona, the Qatar National Convention Center and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall.

Isozaki says Tokyo is at risk of being left with a bloated facility that will get little use to justify its expense. In an open letter, he has called for the architect to go back to the drawing board and redesign the stadium.
