2020 and Beyond: Preparing for the Olympic and Paralympic Games & Tokyo’s Bright Future
Yoichi Masuzoe
Governor of Tokyo

Tokyo Gov. Yoichi Masuzoe wears many hats as he runs the Japanese capital.

Masuzoe traveled to the British capital in October and came away impressed by London's campaign to promote the use of eco-friendly bicycles as a means of transportation because the roads in London are ''narrow and very similar to those in Tokyo.''

His government recently joined the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the central government in inaugurating an accessibility council to promote barrier-free facilitate in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. A review of the proposed main stadium and related facilities may be in the works due to environmental concerns.

A former scholar and TV commentator, Masuzoe was first elected to the House of Councillors in 2001. He served as health, labor and welfare minister under the governments of Shinzo Abe, Yasuo Fukuda and Taro Aso from 2007 to 2009. He headed the New Renaissance Party between 2010 and 2013 before his successful run for Tokyo governor earlier this year.
