Goshi Hosono, Akira Nagatsuma and Katsuya Okada on their strategies to revive the party

DPJ Presidential Candidates
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with simultaneous interpretation

Leading the Democratic Party of Japan has to be the most unenviable job in Japanese politics right now. Having been cast out of office by Shinzo Abe's Liberal Democratic Party in December 2012, the DPJ again fared badly in last month's "Abenomics" election. To add to the ignominy, the party's then leader, Banri Kaeda, lost his seat.

Reviving the DPJ's fortunes now falls to one of three men who are standing for the party presidency in an election to be held on 18 January. Whoever is chosen will immediately have to reach out to the voters who stayed away from the polls on 14 December – unwilling to vote for Abe, and disenchanted by what they saw as the lack of alternatives.

The three candidates –Goshi Hosono, Akira Nagatsuma and Katsuya Okada, – will appear together at the FCCJ on 15 January to make their case and take questions from journalists.

Hosono, 43, has talked about reforming the DPJ, possibly to include cooperation with politicians from other parties. The Kyoto University graduate was minister in charge of issues related to the March 2011 nuclear disaster.

Nagatsuma, a prominent Abe critic, made his name exposing the mismanagement of the national pension system during Abe's first stint as prime minister in 2007. The 54-year-old former business reporter has recently criticised the widening income gap under Abe Mark II.

Okada, 61, led the DPJ in 2004 and also served as foreign minister and deputy prime minister. The Tokyo University graduate says he wants to re-establish the DPJ as the only alternative to the LDP. The most experienced of the three candidates, he has a reputation for being a fiscal hawk.
