"Japanese Media, their Problems and Challenges"
Kaori Hayashi
Professor, Graduate School of Interdiciplinary Information Studies, the University of Tokyo
A member of the third-party independent panel studying the Asahi Shimbun's retraction of articles on the 'comfort women'
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English

Controversy surrounding the Asahi Shimbun's handling of both the comfort women and the Fukushima nuclear power plant controversies has undermined the credibility of the Japanese print media.

The public broadcaster NHK also faces challenges, including ensuring fairness and transparency in its editorial operations since the appointment of Katsuto Momii as its president.Momii caused a stir for his controversial comments on the comfort women and other issues.

The Asahi has dealt with the twin crises by appointing a third-party panel to probe its retractions and corrections, in sharp contrast to the New York Times and the Washington Post. The influential U.S. dailies conducted independent investigations into the Jayson Blair and Janet Cooke fiascosand extensively printed their findings, respectively.

Kaori Hayashi, professor of the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies at the University of Tokyo, will come to the club to offer her views on the tasks facing Japanese journalism and its role in society.

A native of Nagoya, Hayashi studied in Germany and the United States before graduating from Nanzan University in 1987. She worked in Reuters' Tokyo bureau in 1988-1991 before earning an MA and PhD from the University of Tokyo. She also taught courses on modern Japan at the University of Dusseldorf and served as a researcher at the University of Bamberg from 2001 to 2004 before starting a full-time teaching career at the University of Tokyo.
