A group of Japanese citizens are suing the Asahi Shimbun for injuring their human rights and honor through articles the newspaper published on comfort women. Two of the group's organizers will explain their case at this press conference.

The Asahi has acknowledged that a number of articles about comfort women published in the 1980s and 1990s were based on interviews with a source whose claims were later found to be false. Last year, the Asahi formally retracted 18 articles and apologized to readers. (Mainstream historians consider the issue of comfort women--women forced into servitude in Japanese military brothels in the 1930s and 1940s--established historical fact) But that's not enough for the members of the Asahi Shimbun wo Tadasu Kokuminkaigi (the National Citizens Council for Investigating the Asahi Shimbun). Their suit demands compensation of 10,000 yen for each plaintiff for damage to their rights and honor. The group also wants the Asahi to carry ads apologizing for spreading erroneous facts internationally. The group has at least 8,700 supporters and hopes to attract more.

Two of the organizers of the suit will explain their demands and their reasons for taking action at this press conference. Hideaki Kase is chairman of the Society for the Dissemination of Historical Fact, which supports a revisionist view of the many circumstances surrounding the Second World War. He was educated at Keio University, Yale and Columbia and served as a special advisor to prime ministers Yasuo Fukuda and Yasuhiro Nakasone. Satoru Mizushima is known for directing the film "Nanking no Shinjitsu (The Truth About Nanjing)". He is president of Japan Cultural Channel Sakura, Inc., a TV channel that supports nationalist causes.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
