"Diving through Time and History"
Şahika Ercümen
World Record Holder Free-Diver
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English

When the Sultan Abdulhamid II sent the Ottoman Navy frigate Ertugrul on a goodwill mission to Japan in 1889, he had little idea that the journey would come to an abrupt and tragic end. After completing its mission the frigate set sail from Yokohama on September 15, 1890 but caught in a typhoon and sank off the coast of Kushimoto. Around 530 perished.

Local residents saved 68 from a certain death and gave them shelter, food and care despite their own impoverished and harsh living conditions. A series of events are taking place over the year to commemorate the 125th anniversary of this incident which paved strong and ever-lasting friendship between two nations off the opposite ends of the Asian continent. Şahika Ercümen is coming to Japan on a special mission arranged by the Turkish Navy and Turkish Embassy in Japan to perform an epic dive to the crash site to lay down a plaque in memory of the victims.

Sahika set a world record in free diving in 2011 with a 110-meter swim under the ice of Lake Weissensee, Austria. This feat was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the record for both women and men. The previous records were 70-meters for women and 108-meters for men.

On June 1, 2013, she broke her own world record diving in variable weight apnea to a depth of 61-meters in the saline soda waters and high altitude of Lake Van, eastern Turkey. She chose this site because she wanted to call world's attention to the migration of the Pearl Mullet (Chalcalburnus tarichi), aka Lake Van fish.

She will talk about her diving experience in Kushimoto at the FCCJ.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
