In late 2011, longtime FCCJ member Lucy Craft and two US-based colleagues suddenly realized they shared an amazing story - their Japanese mothers had met and married American men stationed in Japan during the postwar Occupation.

Tens of thousands of Japanese women found their way to new lives in America over the course of the 1950s, a remarkable yet overlooked mass migration that helped shift attitudes about Asian immigrants, and, in small towns across America, helped bridge relations between the two nations.

Lucy and her colleagues - Washington Post editor Kathryn Tolbert, and former National Geographic photographer Karen Kasmauski - ran a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising nearly $38,000 to finance a 26-minute documentary exploring the war bride phenomenon. The three directed a film that is highly personal and painfully honest, examining their family experiences both as journalists and firstborn daughters.

A shortened version of the film was broadcast on BBC World News in August, garnering widespread positive feedback from audiences globally. The film was selected for the Boston Asian-American Film Festival in October, and the Philadelphia Asian-American Film Festival in November.

As they distribute the film in both countries, the trio is preparing to fundraise for a full-length film that will look at the war brides and their fascinating influence on pop culture, race relations, immigration and national identity.

Lucy Craft is a freelance journalist and works as a producer for CBS News Tokyo. Kenji Sekine runs United People, a Fukuoka-based film distributor specializing in social issues. Prof. Shigeyoshi Yasutomi is a leading expert on the Japanese war bride migration.
