Former Soka Gakkai headquarter staff speak out about the religious organization

Co-authors of “Jitsumei Kokuhatsu, Soka Gakkai”

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation

Japan's Constitution may stipulate a separation of religion and state, but there is one religious organization which has gathered to itself an enormous amount of political power. The Soka Gakkai Buddhist religious movement claims to have a Japanese membership of just over eight million, but their degree of political mobilization is almost unrivalled in this East Asian nation.

Soka Gakkai is, of course, the mother organization for the Komeito Party, the smaller member of the two-party governing coalition of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. As such, it is ideally positioned, not only to advance its priorities, but also to protect itself from too much unwanted scrutiny.

Both Soka Gakkai and Komeito were long attached to Japan's 1947 Peace Constitution, but a decade and a half of political alliance with the Liberal Democratic Party has eroded this position substantially. Not all members of the religious organization have witnessed this change gladly.

Our three speakers-Shuichi Kodaira, Yusuke Noguchi, and Kiyoshi Takigawa-were all once high-level members of Soka Gakkai who have been expelled. They were vocally opposing the recent policies changes, especially the drift away from pacifism.

Come and take this rare opportunity for a peak inside one of Japan's most secretive and powerful organizations.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
