Risk of Unsustainable Seafood Use for Tokyo 2020 Olympics

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are cursed with issues such as the plagiarism of its emblems and the fierce row between Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike and the Tokyo Olympics Committee over the budget. The last thing Japan wants is another issue that could undermine the reputation of what could be a productive sports festival, which Tokyo hopes will buoy the teetering Japanese economy.

Still, some experts say the Tokyo Olympics might have yet another issue: food sustainability.

The Tokyo Olympics Committee on Friday is set to publish its opinion about food sustainability. But the committee is likely to accept a domestic fishery certification called MEL (Marine Eco Label), which does not meet international standards of sustainability.

Environmental protection and sustainable, responsible use of resources have been an important policy of the International Olympic Committee.

While the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Committee says it is committed to the policy, Wakao Hanaoka, CEO and Founder of Seafood Legacy Co. Ltd and Ruth Westcott, Campaign Coordinator at Sustainable Fish Cities, argue that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are at the risk of serving unsustainable seafood and species on IUCN Red List (the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) such as Pacific bluefin tuna.
