The end of the administration of Barack Obama and the emergence of Donald Trump as President of the United States may seem like it has changed almost everything in the diplomatic policies of the world's most powerful nation, but when it comes to the controversial issue of the relocation of the US Marines from Futenma to a new airbase in Henoko, the message is one of no change at all.
In their recent bilateral summit, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Trump agreed that the construction of Henoko airbase is "the only solution" for the relocation of Futenma base, endorsing without any revision or argument the policy of the Obama administration.
Outside of the US-Japan alliance's political establishment, however, there are many who do not accept that Henoko is "the only solution" nor even the best solution. Our guests will sketch out an alternative vision for the resolution of this ongoing political confrontation between Tokyo and Naha.
