"Foreign Detainees on Hunger Strike"

Foreigners held at immigration centers in Tokyo and Nagoya have been going on hunger strikes to protest against their detentions and conditions in the facilities.

More than 20 people, of nationalities including Iranian, Turkish and Vietnamese, recently ended their protest in Nagoya, while detainees in Tokyo continue to refuse meals. A Vietnamese man died earlier this year in Tokyo.

The majority of the detainees are foreign nationals whose visas expired and are deemed to be in Japan illegally. Others were arrested after arriving without appropriate documentation, and the rest have been convicted of crimes and are awaiting deportation.

Here to discuss the situation and the plight of the detainees are Mitsuru Miyasako of the Provisional Release Association in Japan (PRAJ), and Shoichi Ibusiki, a lawyer and legal adviser to the advocate group.

Miyasako is PRAJ's director of secretariat and was involved with the formation of the group in 2010. Ibusuki is the representative of the Lawyers Network for Foreign Workers.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website  (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
