"Japan's most successful woman's tennis player"

Lanuage: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation

After a glittering career in professional tennis, the world’s former women's No.4, Kimiko Date, is calling it a day. At 46, chronic knee and shoulder pain is forcing her to make the "difficult decision" to stop competing, she recently wrote on her blog. Date says the Japan Women's Open, which takes place in from September 11 – 17, will be her final tournament. She will come to the FCCJ to officially announce her retirement to the foreign media.

Date is Japan's most successful woman's tennis player, having reached the semifinals of three Grand Slam tournaments and a top position of No. 4 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. She won the Japan Open four times and the prestigious Toray Pan Pacific in 1995. After a hugely successful "first" career, she retired unexpectedly at the age of 26 in 1996.

She got married and dived into other activities, including a children's tennis program, but stayed fit through running and eventually decided to return to competition at the age of 37. In 2009, she became the second-oldest winner of a WTA tournament and even reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open doubles tournament in 2014.

She will come to the FCCJ to discuss what she calls her next challenge – facing up to life away from the professional sporting world.
