Japan's chief TPP negotiator

Kazuyoshi Umemoto, Chief Negotiator,

the Government Headquarters for the TPP, Cabinet Secretariat

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

After almost eight years, a revised Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement is set to be signed on March 8 in Chile, albeit without the United States, which pulled out of the initial version of the agreement immediately after U.S. President Donald Trump took office in 2017.

Eleven countries have been working on the details after the abrupt departure of the U.S., and last month, those countries met in Tokyo to agree on the terms of the (now re-named) Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The free economic zone which now covers 13 percent of the global GDP and 6.7 percent of the world population is set to take effect as early as 2019.

Although Japan will not enjoy as much as the 14-trillion yen economic benefit that the government had initially estimated without the United States, the agreement is a big plus for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government as it formed part of his reform and growth plan when he took office in 2012.

Instrumental to the new economic pact is Kazuyoshi Umemoto, Japan's chief negotiator. He was tapped for the post (while serving as Japan's Ambassador to Italy) to revamp the TPP 11 negotiations in the wake of the US withdrawal.

Umemoto will come to the FCCJ to talk about the economic impact the TPP will bring to member nations, especially Japan, He will be able to discuss the possibility of the U.S. returning to the pact, in the light of Mr. Trump's suggestion last month that he would consider rejoining if the US could strike a "substantially better deal."

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
