Sam Rainsy, Former President, Cambodia National Rescue Party

The speech and Q & A will be in English

No one can talk about Cambodia's turbulent post-Vietnam War history without reference to Mr. Sam Rainsy. An economist and former president of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) he has long sparred with Cambodia's powerful current leader, Hun Sen. Forced into exile in France first in 2006 he returned to a warm welcome in 2013 only to forced again into exile in 2016. He resigned as party leader in 2017.

In the 2013 general elections the CNRP made substantial gains. In 2017 regional elections under Rainsy's successor, Ken Sokha, it came close to defeating Hun Sen's Cambodia Peoples Party. Hun Sen retaliated by putting Kem Sokha into prison where he remains today. Rainsy has now started his own party the Cambodian National Rescue Movement and seeks international support to help him make a comeback.

He faces severe odds. Hun Sen has shown he will brook no rivals. Opponents are silenced with defamation suits. His regime, established originally by Vietnam, has moved to a strongly pro-China position and is rewarded by substantial private and public investment.

The Club recently heard from former Newsweek Tokyo correspondent Bernie Krisher's daughter and now owner, Deborah, the agonizing story how the Cambodia Daily which he founded was being forced out of business by the Hun Sen regime. Come and hear more about developments in this pivotal Southeast Asian nation.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
