Yoshihiro Yasuda, Aum Asahara's lead counsel during the trial, Attorney, Member of JFBA Death Penalty Moratorium Implementation Committee

The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English Interpretation

Japan's judiciary system has come under increasing scrutiny for its continued advocacy of the death penalty, never more so than in recent months, as public interest mounts over the fate of death row inmate Shoko Asahara, head of the Aum Shinrikyo religious sect, who was found guilty of having ordered the 1995 sarin gas attacks in the Tokyo Subway system which killed 12 people. Tough Japan's executions are unannounced, the media has reported recent telltale signs around the convicted Shinrikyo members' circumstances which suggest plans are proceeding for possible imminent actions.

Yoshihiro Yasuda, Asahara's lead counsel during the trial, has been a long time leading voice against capital punishment as an active member in a variety of influential groups which have called on the Japanese government for the abolition of the death penalty, including the Japanese Federation of Bar Associations, Forum 90, and Amnesty International. He will speak at the club on the Aum Shinrikyo case and current developments in the movement against capital punishment in Japan.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
