Masayuki Tamaki, Sports and Music Critic
Hiroshi Ikezawa, Japan Times Sports Division Manager

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English

"Violence in Sports: How Big Is the Problem?"

Rodney Dangerfield once joked that he went to watch a fight "and a hockey game broke out." Ice hockey is not alone in being a sport where violence is the norm. American football, rugby, soccer, even sumo suffer from excessive violence. The recent case involving the deliberate violent attack on a college quarterback in a Japanese American football game created headlines around the world and once again highlighted the issue of violence in sports.

How prevalent is it in Japan and the rest of the world? To answer this question, the FCCJ will host a panel of two prominent sports figures in Japan:

Masayuki Tamaki is a writer and critic who has covered baseball extensively as well as commentating on other sports. He has written several sports-based books and is currently a visiting professor at the Shizuoka University of Art and Culture and Ishinomaki Senshu University.

Hiroshi Ikezawa is head of the Sports Department at The Japan Times and is an expert on American football in Japan and America. He is a member of Professional Football Writers of America.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
