The speech and Q&A will be in Japanese with English interpretation

Hitoshi Nogawa, Leader of the Plaintiff Group
Shiki Tomimasu, Plaintiff's Lawyer's Group, Attorney-at-Law

"A Lawsuit Against Deprivation of Japanese Citizenship:
Challenging Japan's Restriction on Dual Citizenship"

The FCCJ will host the lead plaintiff and lawyer in the case challenging the constitutionality of the law that strips Japanese citizens of their nationality if they gain citizenship elsewhere。The press conference immediately follows their oral Arguments in Tokyo District Court.

Plaintiff Hitoshi Nogawa and attorney Shiki Tomimasu will provide background on the case and details about their court appearance, where they are scheduled to make Statements of Opinion.

Nogawa obtained Swiss citizenship in 2001 because it was required for him in order to engage in certain bidding procedures related to his job. But he later discovered it caused him to lose his Japanese citizenship. He and the other plaintiffs in this case argue that a clause in the Nationality Law, which effectively forbids dual citizenship, is unconstitutional.

Tomimasu, their attorney, specializes in defending the rights of foreign citizens and previously represented The Kyoto Korean Elementary School in its hate speech case before the Japanese Supreme Court.

Opponents of the law say that, at a time when Japan is looking for ways to stem population decline, it should not revoke the nationality of citizens it already has. And Japan is in the minority of countries in this regard: As of 2011, 103 of 195 nations allow citizens to retain their original nationality even if they obtain another citizenship.
