Yusaku Maezawa

#dearMoon Host Curator / Entrepreneur and CEO of ZOZO

"SpaceX BFR's First Private Moon Passenger"

A half-century after astronauts first waked on the moon, Yusaku Maezawa, an internet entrepreneur from Chiba prefecture, has agreed to make the same journey as the first private passenger to Earth's satellite.

The-42-year old's journey to this point has itself been remarkable. After leaving high school, he started an imported CD and record mail-order business while dreaming of success in a band. But when the band's first album finally launched in 1998, Maezawa abandoned his music career to concentrate on building a fashion-focused retail empire. By 2004 – now a pioneer of Japanese e-commerce, he launched the ZOZOTOWN online fashion website. His most famous innovation – tipped by some to revolutionise the way that clothing is sold online – centres around a skin-tight catsuit that will share its wearer's measurements with clothing manufacturers.

As the core business has surged from strength to strength, the parent company, Zozo has become a favourite with investors. With his great wealth, Maezawa has indulged a range of passions, most prominently as record-breaking collector of art. Six years ago, he established the Contemporary Art Foundation in Tokyo to promote contemporary art and support up-and-coming talent. He has also assembled a fleet of sports cars and allowed rumours to circulate that he could soon become a baseball team owner.

But perhaps the greatest adventure will be his planned, 800,000km round-trip excursion into the cosmos – a mission fraught with peril that is planned for 2023 and comes courtesy of Elon Musk's company, Space X. Join Mr. Maezawa for a discussion of this extraordinary landmark in the progress of both space tourism and internet entreprenneurialism.
