"The Digital Revolution in News: why the world has embraced it and why Japan has not?"

Some 40 million newspapers are sold every day in Japan (population 126 million). That's nearly 10 million more than in the United States (population 325 million). In 2000, just under 80,000 journalists worked for US newspapers; in 2017, the number was 39,000. According to the Reuters Institute, while Americans now look to the Internet as their number one source of news, in Japan TV is number one, online news is two, and social media is a low four, well below newspapers. But the digital revolution has not been all bad news: as French online news site Mediapart's Philippe Ries will explain, it is possible for veterans of print media to go digital, get scoops, and make money doing it. BuzzFeed Japan is a rare example of a successful online news venture in this country. Yoshihiro Kando will tell us why. Kyodo's Yasuomi Sawa, who wrote the Japan section of the Reuters Institute Digital News Report last year, will provide an overview, and Bill Emmott will talk about how some of the major destroyers of the traditional news media in the US are working to revive it.
