Yoshiko Sakurai, Journalist, President of the Japan Institute for National Fundamentals

The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English Interpretation

"The Legal Fight over the Reporting of Comfort Women"

On November 9th, Sapporo District Court announced a landmark decision relating to the issue of 'comfort women,' Asian women pressed into service across a vast network of Japanese wartime military brothels. Takashi Uemura, a former journalist with the Asahi newspaper, sued and lost to Yoshiko Sakurai, an ally of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who accuses him of fabricating stories. Sakurai says the women were prostitutes and blames the Asahi for spreading falsehoods.

A former journalist herself, Sakurai was for several years a news presenter for Nippon Television. She has since become one of Japan's most prominent historical revisionists. She is a supporter of right-wing lobby group Nippon Kaigi and president of the Japan Institute for National Fundamentals, a conservative think tank. She and her supporters have long argued that the comfort women were not taken by force.

Despite a "final and irrevocable" deal to end the comfort women dispute in 2015, the issue continues to poison ties between Japan and South Korea. Seoul now looks set to scrap a fund partly set up by Japan to compensate the surviving women. Sakurai will give her views on the result of the Sapporo court battle and on the diplomatic row that again threatens to disrupt business between the two Asian powers.
