Asa-kai – FCCJ Breakfast Meeting
Steve Herman, VOA White House Bureau Chief and Former FCCJ President

(The speech and Q & A will be in English)

"The Trump White House and Its Policies Toward Asia"

Two years into the Trump administration, a new Congress is taking office with a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives. How will this affect U.S. policy toward Asia? On trade, North Korea and other policies affecting the region, will it force President Trump to be conciliatory or drive him to be more hard-line?

There is perhaps no person better suited to help us answer these questions than Steve Herman, the White House bureau chief for Voice of America and a former FCCJ president. Herman reported from Asia for more than a quarter of a century, including 16 years in Tokyo and stints as VOA's correspondent and bureau chief in India, South Korea and Thailand. He returned to the United States in 2016 as VOA's Senior Diplomatic Correspondent, based at the State Department, before taking on the White House beat.

Trump has shaken up U.S. policy on Asia from Tokyo to Pyongyang, holding an unprecedented summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and unsettling allies by picking a fight with China on trade. Herman is a frequent commentator on these and other developments, appearing on BBC and other major TV and radio networks around the world to discuss the twists and turns of the Trump administration.

Herman served as FCCJ president in 1997-98 and as FPIJ chairman for about five years. He is a past president of the Seoul Foreign Correspondents' Club and a former governor of the Overseas Press Club of America.
