"US-China Technology Turmoil -- Implications for Japan"

Language: The speech and Q&A will be in English.

The intense competition between China and the United States in artificial intelligence and 5G networks has grabbed worldwide attention. Huawei's campaign to have its 5G technology adopted as the world standard and what appear to be US attempts to prevent that, is a case in point. But while the US-China technology turmoil hogs the headlines, developments in AI and related technologies in Japan have been all but ignored. For example, one of Japan's first "unicorn" companies (startup that achieves a market valuation of over $1 billion) is Preferred Networks Inc., which applies AI to manufacturing, transportation, and healthcare. Professor Dasher will present examples of Japanese innovation in AI and related technology areas, and explore positive and negative scenarios for companies, universities and government in Japan. Five years ago, when Dasher spoke at the FCCJ, he lamented the lack of innovation at Japanese firms. What has happened in the intervening five years that has triggered innovation among some firms, while not at others?

Dasher is in an ideal position to respond to the above question. His research and teaching focus on the impact of new technologies on industry structure, entrepreneurial innovation systems, innovation management, and the relationship between innovation and economic growth. Dasher also maintains an active management consulting practice, through which he advises selected start-up companies, business accelerators, venture capital firms, and nonprofit organizations in Silicon Valley, China, Japan, and South Korea.
