One of Shakespeare's comedies, the play's main themes include justice, "mortality and mercy in Vienna," and the dichotomy between corruption and purity: "some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall." Mercy and virtue prevail, as the play does not end tragically, with virtues such as compassion and forgiveness being exercised at the end of the performance.

Directed by Desmond Davies for the BBC series, the sets include a brothel based on a traditional Western saloon and a prison designed on a typical horror movie dungeon.

The part of the Duke is played by Kenneth Colley, Isabella by Kate Nelligan and Angelo by Tim Piggott-Smith. Adrienne Corri takes the key role of Mistress Overdone and the seedy Pompey Bum is played by Frank Middlemass.

Giving us his insights into this play is Paul Snowden, one of our regular contributors. A Master of Arts graduate of King's College Cambridge, Snowden has had a distinguished academic career in Japan. Now semi-retired, he is a professor emeritus of Waseda University, where he was Dean of the School of International Liberal Studies.

Tickets including lunch are 3,000 Yen per person. We sincerely regret this increase, which is our first price hike in seven years. Higher overheads make this inevitable. We ask for your kind understanding.

A cash bar is available from 11:45. Cancellations after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, will be charged in full. Please make reservations through the Front Desk (03-3211-3161).

Lunch is promptly from 12:00. After the video, there will be coffee and dessert and question time. The program will end at about 4:30 p.m.
