NOH WORKSHOP & PERFORMANCE
An Evening of Gorgeous Costumes, Exotic Music, Traditional Dance
May 24, 2019 6:00 p.m.

Noh is a traditional masked drama that has been performed for 700 years in Japan. In the Muromachi Period (1336-1573), Kanami and his son Zeami developed the performance. In 2008, Noh was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage Property by UNESCO.

One of five Noh schools, the Kanze style, took root during Kanami's time. Noh performance was known and operated as Sangaku and Sarugaku at that time in Nara and Kyoto prefectures, then called the Yamato region. Kanami was a master of a performing arts troupe, and Zeami developed Noh drama into a form of art after his work was credited by the Muromachi shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga.

After that, Noh was favored by the shogun family and the aristocracy. Later, in the age of civil wars, it was placed under the patronage of shoguns like Nobunaga Oda and Hideyoshi Toyotomi. Then, Noh was further developed into an official ceremonial performance by the Tokugawa shogunate. The performance became associated with arts of integrity and decency to be enjoyed by warriors and their families, and it has become an art which places an emphasis on tradition and social status.

At our Evening Noh Workshop, Kanze school masters Otomasa Sakai and Otoharu Sakai will give a talk and perform various aspects of Noh, including history, singing, sliding steps called mai, and the evening's program. You will have the opportunity to try Noh songs and mai yourself during the workshop.

FCCJ Special Event
