PROFESSIONAL LUNCHEON

Mark Karpelès, Former CEO of Mt. Gox

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

Mark Karpeles was CEO of what was once the world's largest bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox. The exchange collapsed in 2014 after the hacking of 650,000 bitcoins. In 2015, Karpeles was arrested and held for 11 months without bail on three criminal charges, as police tried to force him to confess to taking the missing bitcoins. Last year, he was found not guilty of two charges — a rare victory in Japan where post-indictment conviction rates are 99% - but guilty of one charge for which he received a suspended sentence. The Japanese police have officially closed the case without capturing the alleged hacker, now being held in Greece awaiting extradition to France.

During his detention, Karpeles had much time to think about Bitcoin and the future of cryptocurrencies, which he has now captured in a new book. He will share his thoughts on all, as well as the Japanese judicial system, in a professional lunch on Wednesday.
