Paul John Dizon, President of NAMASUFA (Filipino labor union)

Jamila Seno, Board of Director of NAMASUFA

(The speech and Q & A will be in English and Tagalog with English interpretation)

"Plight of Sumitomo Group Banana Workers"

Since the end of 2018, around 900 banana packing plant workers in the Philippines affiliated with Sumifru -- formerly known as "Sumisho Fruits" and a part of the Sumitomo Group -- have been fired due to their participation in a strike, according to local labor union NAMASUFA. Beyond the dismissals, Amnesty International says the workers have faced multiple attacks since declaring their strike, including the killing of a prominent union leader and the burning down of the union office and the houses of some members.

The Philippines' Department of Labor and Employment declared the dismissals following the strike invalid, and ordered workers to be reinstated earlier this year, according to NAMASUFA. But the company continues to defy the department order, they say.

Labor union leader Dizon and another former worker who led the strike efforts will speak on the conditions faced by workers and the company's crackdown on the union.
