Takashi Tachibana, Leader of the Party to Protect Citizens From NHK

(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation)

"Does Japan Really Need Saving from NHK?"

Forget the consumption tax hike, constitutional reform, issues with the nation's pension system, or any of the mainstream issues affecting Japan today. A new political party ― which claims to have no particular political beliefs but which has supported local assembly candidates who reportedly espoused anti-Korean views ― won a seat in this month's upper house election on the promise of destroying the public broadcaster, NHK.

"NHK Kara Kokumin wo Mamoru To," or the Party to Protect Citizens From NHK gained just of 3% of all votes cast nationally in the proportional representation section of the election. This propelled "N-Koku"'s leader Takashi Tachibana into a seat in Nagatacho. The party also now includes Lower House member Hodaka Maruyama, who was expelled from the Japan Restoration Party after getting drunk and stating that Japan would have to go to war with Russia if it wanted the Northern Territories returned.

N-Koku's main policy idea during the campaign was to scramble NHK broadcasts so that only viewers who wished could pay the license fees necessary to see the channel's programs. Those who wanted to only watch other channels could avoid paying the fee.

Tachibana, a former NHK employee, will come to the FCCJ to explain why he set up the party, and what he really hopes to achieve.

Doors open for TV crew only at 11:15, all others at 11:30. Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or on the website (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation. Livestreaming of press conferences are available on our website (
