Robert Taylor & Lydia Gerard, Concerned Citizens of St. John Parish

, University Network for Human Rights

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

A groundbreaking new health study by the University Network for Human Rights has found unusually high rates of cancer and other illness in the area near a chemical plant in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, on the Western edge of New Orleans. The plant is owned by Denka Performance Elastomer (DPE), which is owned by two Japanese corporations: Denka Co. Ltd. (70%) and Mitsui Co. Ltd. (30%).

In 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that residents of the census tract closest to the Denka plant have the highest risk in the U.S. of developing cancer from air pollution-nearly 50 times the national average.

In 2016, residents formed a group called the Concerned Citizens of St. John Parish. With help from statisticians and epidemiologists at Stanford University, the group conducted a household health survey in March 2018 to collect information on the prevalence of cancer and other illness in the vicinity of the Denka plant. The survey revealed that among the surveyed residents, rates of cancer and other illness are highly unusual and correlated with proximity to the Denka plant-cancer prevalence was significantly higher with closer proximity to the plant.

In June, prior to the release of the report, members of the group traveled to Tokyo to confront Denka officials outside their annual shareholder meeting.

Two members of the group who live close to the Denka plant, along with the executive director of the University Network for Human Rights, will come to the Club to talk about their campaign.
