Denis Mukwege, Gynecologist, Nobel Peace Laureate

(The speech and Q & A will be in French with English interpretation)

"Protecting Women from Sexual Violence in War and Promoting Human Rights"

Dr. Denis Mukwege, the Congolese gynecologist who won the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for his fight against sexual violence, comes to Japan in the midst of his world tour to solicit support for a fund he has launched to provide reparations for survivors of conflicts around the globe.

He will speak at the FCCJ on his longtime campaign to enhance women's rights, end sexual violence in conflicts and call for a "more active involvement by all citizens and governments" in empowering women, according to his message to the Club. While in Japan, Mukwege will also visit the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima and lecture on women's rights at the University of Tokyo.

His hospital in war-torn Congo has treated over 50,000 victims of sexual violence. Mukwege shared the Nobel prize with Iraqi minority human-rights activist Nadia Murad "for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict." In Congo, where civil strife rages over control of rich mineral resources, sexual violence is "deliberately used as a tactic of war to terrorize people," he says.
