FCCJ Special Event: WAGASHI Workshop

Friday October 25, 2019 6:00 p.m.-9:00p.m.

The word WAGASHI, meaning Japanese confections, is generally a new word. After the Meiji Period when Western confections were introduced, the word WAGASHI was used to differentiate between the two types of sweets. Nowadays, it refers to sweets that are uniquely Japanese.

WAGASHI have their roots in four styles of sweets,
Fruits and nuts,Togashi(Chinese Pastries), Tenjin (Light meal between regular meals introduced by Zen Priests) and Nambangashi (sweets introduced when interactions with Portugal and Spain increased). All four styles were mutually influential in shaping Japan's sweets culture.

Seasonal flowers are often featured in WAGASHI design. This seems to reflect the aesthetic sense of the Japanese who enjoy the beauty of flowers and who try to sense the change of the seasons in them.

Most of WAGASHI ingredients are plant- based, such as azuki beans, rice and other grains. (An exception to this is egg.) WAGASHI is relatively low in calories compared to Western sweets, which often use such ingredients as butter, fresh cream, and gelatin.

After a short explanation about WAGASHI, participants will be invited to make WAGASHI under instruction of WAGASHI masters. Then we enjoy WAGASHI together with one of the most famous Japanese green teas SAYAMA Tea.
From this event, The Foreign Correspondents'Club of Japan hopes to contribute Introducing WAGASHI to the World together with Towa Doyukai.
