Yasunori Kagoike, Former Head of Moritomo Gakuen

Junko Kagoike, Former Deputy Head of Moritomo Gakuen

(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation)

"Behind the Moritomo Gakuen Scandal and Its Criminal Trial"

In 2017, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's leadership was tested by riveting allegations of cronyism in a scandal that involved education group Moritomo Gakuen. The right-wing institution had been allowed to purchase state land in Osaka at a massive discount to build a new elementary school. The price tag of ¥134 million, despite a valuation of ¥956 million, raised many eyebrows, as did the fact that Mr Abe's wife Akie was meant to be its honorary principal.

Mr Abe, who told the Diet he would resign if either he or his wife was involved, weathered the scandal's twists and turns and is still Prime Minister several elections later. Meanwhile, Moritomo Gakuen's former chief Yasunori Kagoike and his wife Junko – key figures behind the controversy – were criminally indicted for fraudulently obtaining state and local subsidies. The couple, who were detained for about 10 months before their release on bail in May 2018, have claimed their arrests were politically motivated.

Immediately after the conclusion of their criminal trial in Osaka, Mr Kagoike - who last spoke at the FCCJ - in March 2017, will address the Club together with his wife.
