Kazunori Saito, Vice-president of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations

Shinji Oguma, Secretary-general, All-Party Parliamentary Group to Discuss the Future of Capital Punishment in Japan

Mario Marazziti, World Coalition Against the Death Penalty

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English and Japanese with English interpretation.

In the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) has launched a campaign to abolish the death penalty in 2020, as it alleges, to bring Japan in line with other countries that recognize the death penalty as both inhumane and ineffective as a deterrent.

In parallel, Pope Francis, soon to visit Japan, is also campaigning against the death penalty, as he expected to make clear while on his visit. This will include the Pope meeting with Iwao Hakamada, released in 2014 after 48 years on death row, accused of a crime of which it now appears he is innocent.

Come the Club to hear speakers Mario Marazziti, deputy in the Italian parliament, cofounder of World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, and representative of the Community of Sant' Egidio; Kazunori Saito, vice-president of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations; and Shinji Oguma, secretary-general of the All-Party Parliamentary Group to Discuss the Future of Capital Punishment in Japan.
