Robert Feldman, Senior Advisor, Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities
Masaaki Kanno, Chief Economist, Sony Financial Holdings

(The speech and Q & A will be in English)

"Economic Outlook 2020"

2019 was not an easy year for the Japanese economy. The US-China trade war has weighed heavily on exports, while domestic sales are struggling to shake off a rise in consumption tax. Economic growth has been sluggish, while inflation still remains far below the Bank of Japan's 2 per cent target.

But what about 2020? Will this be the year that the trade war will ease, and provide a boost to the Japanese economy? Will the central bank manage to find a way to grow inflation? How will Japan ride out the weaknesses and uncertainties of the global economy?

Masaaki Kanno and Robert Feldman – eminent economists who are renowned for their sharp analyses on the Japanese economy – will come to the Club to discuss Japan's economic prospects for 2020.

Mr Kanno, chief economist at Sony Financial Holdings, is responsible for outlining the firm's official view on the Japanese and global economy. He was previously the chief economist for Japan at JP Morgan, and was also a Bank of Japan official for many years. He has been part of several government committees, including a 2013 panel to discuss reforms of the Government Pension Investment Fund.

Mr Feldman, a senior advisor at Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities, is part of the firm's global economics team. He is responsible for thematic research on the Japanese economy, and serves on several economic study committees for government ministries. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 1998, he was the chief Japan economist for Salomon Brothers and worked for the International Monetary Fund.
