Shigeru Ishiba, Member of House of Representatives, LDP

Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

Shigeru Ishiba needs little introduction for those who follow Japanese politics. He has twice emerged as Shinzo Abe's main rival as president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, and thus prime minister of Japan, scoring widespread support among the party's rank-and-file. Though a conservative himself, he is often the most outspoken lawmaker within the ruling party in his criticisms of the Abe regime. The prime minister has repeatedly made efforts to marginalize Ishiba and his faction within ruling party counsels. And yet, Ishiba has consistently polled as one of the most popular choices to become prime minister when the Abe era ends.

At age 63 and based in his electoral stronghold of Tottori Prefecture, and with a resume including stints as Defense Minister and LDP Secretary-General, there's plenty of reason to believe that Ishiba will return to the top ranks of the Japanese government in the future.

The Club will be hosting Ishiba for a discussion of the Tokyo Olympics, the course of the Abe government, and much more. It is not to be missed!
